Two new imported COVID-19 cases bring total to 1,546

Two new imported cases of COVD-19 were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s total count to 1,546, according to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control. Both the two new patients are Vietnamese citizens returning from the US transiting the Republic of Korea. They have been hospitalized at the Phu Yen general hospital.

Five COVID-19 patients were given the all-clear, raising the total number of recoveries to 1,411. Fatalities remain at 35. Among patients still under treatment, nine have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19, once, 15 twice and seven thrice.

A total of 18,603 people who had close contact with COVID-19 patients or arrived from pandemic-affected areas are being quarantined nationwide. As the risk of the pandemic entering the country from outside remains very high, the steering committee urged the entire country to continue strictly maintaining preventive measures, including tightening control of people’s movement across the border.

Hanoi tightens COVID-19 prevention and control

Vice-Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee Chu Xuan Dung has required departments, agencies, mass organizations, and people to continue seriously comply with the Prime Minister and municipal authorities’ instructions on strengthening COVID-19 prevention and control.

Deputy Director of the municipal Health Department Hoang Duc Hanh said the risk of the COVID-19 infection in the community remains high because the pandemic is still raging in other countries while there are many people illegally crossing the border to enter Vietnam each day. Meanwhile, the cold weather also makes it easier for the virus to spread, he said, adding that negligence in the community after a long time without any community infection is another problem.

Director of the municipal Health Department Nguyen Khac Hien asked districts, communes, and townships to have plans readied in order to timely respond to emergencies when infections are discovered and prevent their spread in the community. According to him, the city will soon put the Me Linh field hospital into operation to quarantine F1 cases.

10 students volunteer for second Vietnam coronavirus vaccine trial

On Thursday morning, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Hanoi and Hanoi Medical University officially began recruiting for the first stage of trials that would require 120 volunteers aged 18-59 and without underlying health conditions, infectious diseases or allergies. 10 university students signed up Thursday to be vaccinated with Covivac in its first stage of human trials in February.

The volunteers will be divided into four groups, with each receiving four different vaccine dosages, while another group is injected with a placebo. Each group would receive two intramuscular injections of the vaccine, with an interval of 28 days.

Covivac, produced by the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals, is the second Vietnamese-made vaccine to be tested on humans after receiving approval from the Health Ministry. The first was Nanocovax of Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC that had entered trials last month.

Nguyen Ngo Quang, deputy head of the Administration of Science, Technology, and Training under the health ministry, thanked volunteers for registering for the human clinical trials, which play an important part in the research and development of Covid-19 vaccines.
