Manchester United 2-2 Southampton

Manchester United missed the opportunity to enter the Premier League's top four following a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford against Southampton.

After the big defeats for Chelsea and Leicester in the weekend, Manchester United were having a perfect opportunity to move into the Champions League places, said Sky Sports.

Martial should have opened things up inside 10 minutes, as he raced through on goal after a poor mistake by James Ward-Prowse. However, Alex McCarthy was out and raised his arms to beat the strike away. David De Gea was in action a minute later as he held a stinging effort from Armstrong.

However, the goalkeeper was unable to keep the Southampton midfielder out a second time. Paul Pogba could not hold onto a pass from De Gea, with Danny Ings nipping into the ball to Nathan Redmond on the left. He picked out the run of Armstrong towards the back post.

Manchester United were not going to be held back for long and equalised in the 20th minute. Pogba picked out Martial and the striker held the ball up well before poking the ball out for Rashford on the left who fired home into the far corner.

Southampton were lucky to go into the break with a full complement of players as Oriel Romeu caught Mason Greenwood on the ankle.

The second half began with a shot from both sides. Southampton hit Manchester United on the counter-attack as Armstrong found Redmond on the left, but he draffed his shot wide of the post. At the other end, Rashford could only skim the side of the net.

Rashford went close again in the 69th minute. Martial then produced a similar finish as he took advantage of some slow play from Jack Stephens.

Southampton then fired a late warning shot when Redmond forced a leaping from De Gea. The game then went into extended injury time when Walker-Peters and Brandon Williams collided in the air. The Manchester United youngster came off worse and was forced off, taking the hosts down to 10 men.

The Saints took advantage when they equalised in the sixth minute of injury time. Ward-Prowse delivered a trademark in swinging corner, which Jan Bednarek glanced on at the near post.

MU: We didn't deserve three points today

"The mentality has been brilliant. We have had a few setbacks this season. This is another challenge for us," said Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the match:

"I am very confident in [the players'] mentality. I'm disappointed of course, but you have to take the disappointments as well as the positives. We have learned a hard lesson. We will put it right. I trust the boys in that respect."

Despite Manchester United's setback, they will still qualify for the Champions League if they win the last three games, as they travel to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester on the final day of the season, reported by BBC.

"It was the worst time to concede a goal but it happens in football. We have won so many games in that way. It is all part of the learning for this team. You think you have three points in the bag but we probably didn't deserve three points today", said Solskjaer.

"Southampton are a good team, they run, and run and chase. We never got into our rhythm today. We played some fantastic football at times. The two goals we scored were very, very good. It was just one of those days where we did not take our chances and they took theirs."

Premier League Round 36 Preview

Chelsea will look to boost their hope of a Premier League top-four finish against rock-botton Norwich City on Tuesday night. Chelsea vs Norwich City is scheduled on July 14. The match will be behind closed doors at Stamford Bridge with no fans due to government guidelines regarding coronavirus, informed Standard.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's hope for European football will be on the line when they host Premier League champions Liverpool on Wednesday night, July 15.

Arsenal cannot qualify now for the Champions League and must now turn to the Europa League next season. Seventh would also be enough to secure Europa League football for Arsenal.

With three games remaining, Liverpool are eight points away from breaking Manchester City's record for most points in a single Premier League campaign which currently stands at 100. Only maximum points will do for Liverpool, however, who haven’t been in the best form since football returned.
