15,270 Covid-19 infections detected, daily tally in Hanoi down by over 600

A total of 15,270 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed by the Health Ministry on December 16, including 9,888 detected within the local community. The latest infections were reported in 60 provinces and cities across the country, with Hanoi registering 423 transmissions, marking a fall of 601 from the previous day.

According to details given by the Hanoi Center for Disease Control, as many as 1,357 Covid-19 cases were recorded on the evening of December 14, the highest during the fourth pandemic wave, with the number of community infections also hitting a record high of 611 cases.

The southern province of Ca Mau recorded the highest number of infections at 1,339, followed by Ho Chi Minh City with 1,175 and Tay Ninh with 932.

Self-quarantine for fully vaccinated arrivals with negative Covid-19 tests cut to three days

Fully vaccinated foreign arrivals with negative Covid-19 test results will only need to self-quarantine at home or places of accommodation for three days upon entry into Vietnam by air, according to the latest guidance from the Ministry of Health issued on December 16.

The new regulations will be effective from January 1, 2022, the day Vietnam is set to resume regular international flights on a pilot basis. The arrivals must have proof of negative test results, must declare their health status before entry, and must install Vietnam’s PC-COVID app for contact tracing and medical declaration purposes.

Arrivals that are Vietnamese citizens, including Vietnamese citizens residing overseas and the spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens, who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19, can be vaccinated for free during the quarantine period if they want to.

Entrants who have been fully vaccinated, or recovered from Covid-19, must not make direct contact with other people during the first three days, leave their places of residence or designated accommodation (hotels, motels, resorts, offices, dormitories, guest houses, etc.)

PM requires localities to candidly identify hindrances of Covid-19 combat

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 16 chaired an online meeting with localities to find out the root cause of the surge in Covid-19 cases within the community, and seek drastic measures to curb the pandemic spread. The PM, who is also head of the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control, stressed that the pandemic is unpredictable with the emergence of the Omicron variant, while infections and death toll in the country keep rising, hence the meeting.

He required localities to candidly identify problems and difficulties in the pandemic fight, and raise proposals regarding vaccines, treatment drugs, medical supplies as well as the direction and implementation work. Chinh stressed that extra efforts are needed to reduce the number of new cases, severe cases, and fatalities.

He asked localities to continue implementing the Government’s Resolution 128/NQ-CP dated October 11, 2021, on safe and flexible adaptation to and effective control of the pandemic. No locality is allowed to issue regulations contrary to those by the upper level.
